For generations, the YMCA of Metropolitan Lansing has stood as a community anchor and a sanctuary — a beacon of safety, growth and connection that forges character. Over the last few years, we have modernized our reach, expanded our programs and deepened our commitment to the Lansing families who need us most, while keeping our core mission beautifully resolute: Providing youth with somewhere to belong, something to believe in and the people who recognize what their dreams can become.
The Event: The Legacy of Magic Gala

It was a magical celebration of the YMCA of Metropolitan Lansing as a place of purpose and opportunity for our community alongside one of the greatest success stories of the Y and our region: Earvin “Magic” Johnson.
From Lansing to the World
Before Earvin “Magic” Johnson was a household name on the basketball court and a titan in the business world, he simply needed a place to go. Earvin and the Johnson Family found that personal and profound connection right here at the YMCA of Metropolitan Lansing.
The bolstering from a strong family, the backing of a community and the deep sense of belonging discovered at the YMCA all played significant roles in Earvin’s upward trajectory in life. The Legacy of Magic Gala helped ensure that the next generation of little Magics have access to that exact same life-changing mentorship and safety.

Keeping the Magic Going
The gala is over, but The Legacy of Magic is just getting started with the transformation of the former Westside location into the new Earvin “Magic” Johnson YMCA.
This first-of-its-kind recognition in Lansing for the NBA Hall of Famer will include a 2-acre expansion with two additional sport courts, two new turf fields, an acre of green space to expand child care services to youth programming and a new pavilion. The exterior of the facility will include a mural honoring Johnson and the Johnson Family by local artist Dustin Hunt. In addition, a sustaining legacy fund is being established in the Johnson Family’s name to provide Lansing youth with access to educational scholarships for generations to come.
We cannot do this work alone. Every kid deserves a track to run on; a mentor to look up to; and a safe place to learn, grow and thrive. We need your support to keep the momentum going so the YMCA continues providing a safe haven for Lansing’s youth for another 150 years.
